The Maine Event - Part Three: more Brittany

More Brittany... who doesn't love that?

So I've already lost track of what day we're on, but our second night we stayed at a Campground in Pemaquid Point, which was super gorgeous.  We borrowed Adam's camping gear (which he was super generous and naive enough to loan us :)

We set up camp (not noticing at the time that we were the only ones in a tent...), and then headed over to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, which was gorgeous!

I didn't think of it at the time, but my mom pointed out that the house looks just like the one in Lady in White, and it TOTALLY does!

Anyway, we were there right at sunset, so we got some sweet pics...

Got dinner at this cute little shop/restaurant right next to the Lighthouse,

Again, that "Lobster Dinner" sign is just taunting me...  We shared a panini and fries.

So that night at Pemaquid Point we had a nice little fire while we ate our dinner, then we cozied up for bed and pretty much froze to death the rest of the night.  It was in the 40's, and we had blankets and warm-ish clothes, but we just weren't prepared.  Luckily though, neither of us got cranky, and actually, we had lots of laughing fits, mostly because we were so tired.

The next morning we chipped ourselves out of the tent, packed up camp, and headed to Booth Bay, where we visited the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.  I'll have to go back some time with Mom, she'd love it.

We made sure to stop in at Walmart that day on the way to our next campground, so that we could get a space heater and an electric blanket.  Everyone we tell that to is shocked we didn't melt ourselves into the tent, but honestly, we were super careful.  And we slept like babies, which is lovely.

Our second camp, at Bar Harbor Campground, was a much quicker setup, and we pretty much felt like pros.  We were also looking forward to a much warmer sleep.

After setting up camp, we went downtown to walk around a bit before our Ghost Tour,
finding this pretty Inn...

This weird alley...

and a new friend for Brittany.

Our ghost tour was awesome, starting at this house, the "most haunted" in Bar Harbor.  She told us of 3 ghosts associated with this house--a caretaker they call "the stalker," because people report feeling him following them and standing right behind them, or breathing on their neck; a little boy who in a seance said that he drowned "not far from here"; and a bride-to-be, who's fiance disappeared without a trace the night before the wedding.  She was so devastated that she dressed in her wedding dress and hung herself with her wedding veil, in the upstairs sewing room.  They didn't find her for 3 days, and b/c it was summer, her body was super nasty, and her face was contorted in a sickening grin.

This is a shot of the house we got the next day:

We also stopped in a cemetery, a spot along the waterfront, and this amazing theater called the Criterion, which was built in the 1930's, and had a speakeasy underneath.

We couldn't get our fire going that night, because we had tricky wood and it was too windy, but we slept really well, and the next morning were excited to explore...

Acadia National Park

From there we went to Bangor to catch the highway, and also to see the Paul Bunyan statue:

and Stephen King's House.

We drove a pretty long stretch from there back to Mass, stopping at one little spot called
"Wiggly Bridge..."

and checked into our AirB&B, a lovely little coastal-cottage style house owned by a very friendly lady, before heading to dinner at Tavern in the Square, which was super yummy.

The next day we had about 5 hours to tour Salem, so we started at The Witches Dungeon Museum, which was pretty cool.  They have a little stage inside what used to be a church, where live actors portray an accused witch and her accuser before a court, and then you take a guided tour through the replicated "dungeon" where they held accused prisoners.  The conditions were abominable, way worse than I'd ever realized, and it was a very interesting experience.

and though we couldn't go to the colonial village b/c of construction,
we did find "Alison's House"

and "Max's House"

Even though it was kind of a gray, cloudy day, and our last few hours together, we had a fun time exploring Salem again.  But I guess we'll still have to plan another trip, since we missed the Colonial Museum (Zachary Binx's house at the very beginning of Hocus Pocus).  Gave Brit a big hug and dropped her off at the airport to meet Marker, then began the long drive through dark and rain back to the Bevin House.

Despite already missing Brittany, I was looking forward to getting home, taking a long hot shower, and sleeping in my own bed again.  I was also looking forward to seeing Adam, getting started on some new projects, and my favorite time of year--FALL.

Saying Goodbye...

I am writing this post almost 3 years after I took this picture, of a bouquet my lovely friends in my writing group gave me as a fare...
