Then a couple hours later Shannon called me to say they were in Hartford! They'd gotten another flight less than an hour after their first one. I was sooo excited, and luckily free to go pick them up right away. I will not even go into the drama that ensued on the first day (lost luggage, hours in traffic, and lots of stress). But still, we were together, and we got to do some fun things!
We skipped Boston altogether and headed straight to Salem, and though we arrived after dark, some of the attractions were still open because of a festival. First stop: the Salem Witch Museum.
We almost headed home after this, but in a spontaneous moment decided to check out the House of Seven Gables, and I'm so glad we did, because not only was it still open, but they were doing special "Spirits" tours, where performers were stationed throughout the house and acted out characters from the novel. It ended up being one of the highlights of the whole trip.
You can't take pics inside, so all of these are from online. The performances were really well done, and the house is so unusual and interesting. I'm hoping to go again once I've read the novel (which I got at the gift shop) and I can take my time going through the house.
The coolest bit was going through the hidden passage by the fireplace.
Because their luggage got lost, we had to stop for a few things. The trip back to the Bevin House was 3 hours, so we didn't get home til almost 3 am. Still worth it.
